11.23.09 Energy Conservation & High Performance Building Design

Our goal is to reduce the total cost of ownership by analyzing first-cost versus life-cycle costs in the pre-design and selection assessment of all mechanical systems, interior and exterior material pallet, as well as the fixtures, furnishings and equipment required for your new facility. SFL+A has made a substantial investment to acquire the best technical and professional staff, hardware and software technology, and library resources to give us the ability to produce energy efficient, high performance facilities for each client. Our company directive is to design every building for Energy Star rating, and they perform 50% better than the ASHRAE 90.1 baseline. We are also in the process of designing and constructing a number of LEED registered Gold, Silver, and Certified buildings, and encourage our clients at the outset to consider LEED certification and sustainable design initiatives as an integral part of their building program. Our goal is that every new building we design will reduce energy consumption by at least 50%. We accomplish this in a variety of ways depending on the site and the project requirements.
Most importantly, high performance, sustainable design engages a holistic approach to building design. It develops, throughout the process, an understanding of the relationship between all the parts, including the occupants of the building. It is all about understanding how we as people perceive and react to our surroundings and the design that embraces high performance attributes that contributes immensely toward the development of positive and receptive attitudes from occupants. Consideration is paramount in the selection of materials and resources, the development of indoor environmental quality and the introduction of positive elements in the occupants overall experience from outside to inside. The design of a high performance facility will have a positive effect on its occupants and their experience. Our understanding of the process and holistic approach is the basis of our approach to architectural design. Our firm is built on working intimately with our clients to develop the right environment through high performance building design. Ultimately, we would recommend the pursuit of a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Certification from the US Green Building Council as a commitment to the full extent of what a high performance building can mean to your new facility.
