High Performance Schools
Robbie Ferris, CEO of Sff+a Architects and Firstfloor Develop-ment, is a man on a mission. His goal is to change the way we de-sign, construct, and operate K-12 schools. His companies studied what it takes for a school to reach high-performance status. Their findings showed that reduced costs of ownership was achievable.
“What that research taught us,” Ferris said, “is the best way to significantly and consistently cut costs is to reduce energy usage.” With that in mind, Sfl+a honed their strategies with a combination of rooftop solar arrays and smart building systems-to the point where it now constructs schools that generate more energy than they use. In Horry County, S.C., Sfl+a Architects/Firstfloor and their team at Metcon Construction demonstrated how to de-sign/build five new energy-positive schools all at once.
