Project Description
Flatwoods Middle School is a forward‑looking learning environment shaped by SfL+a Architects’ commitment to high‑performance, student‑centered design. Nestled on a growth corridor south of Lillington, the new campus organizes academics in flexible classroom neighborhoods, with daylighted commons that support collaboration, project‑based learning, and small‑group instruction. Robust indoor‑outdoor connections, clear wayfinding, and durable, low‑maintenance materials position the school to serve 1,100 students with safety, clarity, and delight—while meeting Harnett County Schools’ long‑term operational goals.
The design integrates energy‑efficient systems and adaptable spaces—STEM labs, arts, athletics, and community gathering areas—so the building can evolve with curriculum and enrollment. A central courtyard and extended‑learning terraces bring nature into daily routines, while the gymnasium and auditorium anchor the school’s civic presence. In partnership with Metcon through the CMAR delivery method, the team balanced budget, schedule, and performance to deliver a resilient, inspiring middle school that reflects Harnett County’s investment in student success today and for decades to come.
