Tar Heel K-8 School

Bladen County Schools

Project Description

The Tar Heel PK-8 School, situated in northwestern Bladen County at the existing Tar Heel Middle School site, consolidates Plain View Primary School and Tar Heel Middle School PK-8, boasting a combined 166-year history celebrated through memorabilia displays. Architecturally designed for sustainability, the school embraces energy efficiency, solar orientation, natural materials, water conservation, and renewable resources. This design fosters a contemporary educational environment while serving as a teaching tool. This is also the first school in North Carolina to have solar-charged electric school buses.

The building is a 86,637 sf, one-story building accommodating 800 students, fulfilling both elementary and middle school needs. Based on a district-approved prototype with modifications for Pre-K through 8th grade, features a “Main Street Corridor” layout with three classroom wings. During construction, the existing site will remain operational, with site work impacting 12.65 acres while preserving 11.59 acres for outdoor activities, including ball fields and a new septic drain field.
